A standard no name brand 60W incandescent lamp was purchased from Pick n Pay and retailed at R10 exactly. The lamp was tested and produced on average 500lm.
The Flash Components 7W LED A60 ECO lamp retails between R50 to R60. For this comparison R60 was selected for the retail price. The lamp also produces on average 500lm.
Therefore the 7W LED A60 ECO lamp is directly comparable to the standard 60W incandescent lamp.
Description of Norms & Formulas Used
The calculations were performed using the following norms and assumptions.
A household uses on average 10 incandescent lamps to light up a house.
Inflation is on average 6%. The last 10 years inflation figures were used.
The lifetime of a LED lamp A60 ECO is 15 000 hours (approximately 10 years) and an incandescent lamp will last for 1000 hours (approximately 1 year).
The yearly increase in electricity is 8%. This is the figure that has been set NERSA.
The electricity price used is from the City of Cape Town for a domestic household that uses less than 600kWh per calendar month.
The household runs the lamps for on average 4 hours a day.
It was assumed that the consumer will already have incandescent lamps installed in the house therefore there is no initial cost added to calculations for year 1.
Total Wattage (kW) = (Avg Lamps per Household * Lamp Wattage) / 1000 – The total wattage of all the lamps in the household written in kW.
Cost per Hour = (Total Wattage * Electricity Price)/100 – The amount it costs the consumer to run the specific lamp per hour.
Cost per Day = Cost per Hour * Average Runtime per Day – The amount it costs the consumer to run the specific lamp for a day (4 hours).
Cost per Year = Cost per Day * 365 – The amount it costs the consumer to run the specific lamp for a year.
Cost Electricity + Lamp = Cost per Year + Total Price for Lamps – The amount the consumer has to pay for electricity and the cost of the lamps as well.
Saving Including Lamp Cost = (Incandescent Cost Electricity + Lamp) – (A60 Cost Electricity + Lamp) – The saving that the consumer will make if they choose a LED A60 lamp over an incandescent lamp.
